The Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches was promulgated in 1990. This code governs the 22 Eastern Rite Churches, which, while in communion with the pope, retain their unique traditions and discipline. Covering much of the same ground as the Code of Canon Law, the Canons are drawn from the ancient traditions of the Eastern Churches of Christendom.
